Our Jessica Indigo Story

“There’s a story behind everything. How a picture got on a wall. How a scar got on your face. Sometimes the stories are simple and sometimes they are hard and heartbreaking. But behind all your stories is always your mother’s story, because hers is where yours begin.”

― Mitch Albom, For One More Day

Most likely we all know someone named Jessica. We even had friends ask if this shirt was named after them and, somewhat awkwardly, I had to say no. It's named after my Jessica, my mom. She is The Jessica in my life.

In interviews I am often asked about my inspirations and personal style. My answers always come back to my mom. There are moments, often daily, that I realize I am just like her. From the way I season my food, my skillful dodging of a compliment, the overlap of my front teeth. It’s her that I see in the mirror, my spirit, and my heart.

Jeremy often points out that Tradlands’ most influential muse is my mother. I ask her about every fabric I purchase and design before I finalize. She has on point tomboy style that I adore - a combination of effortlessness, comfort, and ageless beauty. When she was young she made most of her own clothing including her prom dress. Today she looks great in my father’s sweaters or a linen button-up and a pair of her beloved clogs. At 31 I see that I have borrowed so much of my own style from her.

Many of our customers and fans are moms. They are wearing our button-ups with a toddler on their hip or while chasing their kids around the park. My mother-in-law is a brave mother of six, a grandmother of ten, and she owns eleven Tradlands shirts. Moms are jack-of-all trades, ready for every adventure and milestone. This is why we design clothing that is comfortable and made to be lived in. Shirts that a mother can pass down to her daughter or that her daughter will borrow from her closet. That’s the kind of clothing I want to put out in the world.
