with Candice M Tay
Introducing a recurring series: Tradlands Worn Well. Interviews with people we admire who are changing the way we get dressed. We talk about living well in clothing you love and how wardrobe choices are shaped by the day-to-day.
Our interview today is with Tradlands muse, Candice Tay. In 2018 she began pursuing a sustainable lifestyle, documenting her journey on her blog and Instagram. Candice focuses on slow fashion in her stellar style posts and, while her platform has grown quickly, she has continued to support small brands like ours along the way. In her words, "Everyone is on a different part of the journey and each step we take to make a difference is a step towards positive change."
How would you describe your personal style?
Classic, simple, and comfortable. I love investing in quality and timelessness when it comes to the pieces I choose to put in my wardrobe. I’m also very inspired by the minimalist, Scandinavian style with oversized pieces, all neutrals, and their casual-chic vibes.
Comfort also plays a huge part in my personal style because I believe that it’s difficult to feel confident in what you’re wearing when you literally feel uncomfortable. I’m a very practical person and I need to know that my clothes are functional and can move with me throughout the day.
Why do you choose to shop ethically?
I believe that everyone deserves fair pay for their work. Fashion or a piece of clothing should not come at the expense of someone else’s life. Being a creative myself, I also know how much hard work goes into the creation process and I love supporting brands that are doing things well and doing them the right way.
What are 3 must-have items in your wardrobe?
My 3 must-have items are an oversized button-up shirt, which is a classic staple in any wardrobe (like the Tradlands flannels!). I always go for a pair of high-waisted jeans when I’m not sure what to wear and I love turtlenecks as a good layering piece.
